Fair rules for data sharing

Course description

Sharing and combining data held by companies and authorities opens up opportunities for building new services. However, data sharing requires clear rules to safeguard the rights of individuals and the bargaining position of small businesses. To this end, the EU has introduced new data-related regulations, the Data Act and the Data Management Act. The opportunities offered by these are explored in this course.

Data sharing takes place especially in the use of smart devices. The use of smart devices is constantly increasing both in people's everyday lives and in industrial environments. When used, devices collect data that may be useful to device users and developers of new services.

Under the new regulations, the EU will oblige smart device manufacturers to give device users access to their own data. This will promote competition in services created from device data and prevent vendor lock-in. In addition, data sharing will be facilitated by trusted data intermediation services and data-altruistic organisations operating in an audited manner and in accordance with the new rules.

Companies need to know the rules of the data economy and the opportunities offered in order to succeed in data-driven competition.
