From figures to insights – develop your statistical literacy and user skills
Production: eOppiva and Statistics Finland
Course description
Reliable data are a prerequisite for social activity and decision-making. The core task of statistics is to describe socially significant phenomena and social development, which is also particularly critical for decision-making based on knowledge. It is difficult to take into account what we do not know, and we must know how to make proper use of the information we do have.
Statistical literacy and user skills above all refer to the ability and capacity to read and interpret correctly the information conveyed by texts, tables and statistical graphs. The volume of information on the web has exploded and there are no guarantees as to the truthfulness of the information there. There is no autopilot to reliable data, so everyone is increasingly responsible for their own competence.
This training course includes examples of the use and benefits of statistical data. The purpose of the examples is to illustrate the significance of both reliable data and the skills needed for applying this information for all experts working with statistical data and for citizens. The aim of the training is thus to lower the threshold for using statistics and to increase the motivation to utilise statistics more widely than before. The activating exercises can also be used to assess your own competence.
